Gestalt Comics is probably the most credible international comics publisher in Australia. Top quality content and equally good production values.
Gestalt are about to launch an anthology of horror comics called
FLINCH, featuring work by the cream of Australia's talent: Colin Wilson, Tom Taylor, Tom Bonin, Bobby N., Chris Bones, Terry Dowling and many many others. Cover by the highly feted Shaun Tan. This book is
lush.
Diamond Comics have a virtual monopoly on Direct Market distribution of comics in English speaking countries. They have a policy of cancelling solicted books if the orders for those books do not meet a certain sales threshold...unless, of course, they decide to make an exception.
Wolfgang at Gestalt has just learned that FLINCH has been desolicited for this reason... which means that the stores who ordered the book will not be receiving copies. Which sucks, but that's not even the real issue.
The real issue is that Diamond didn't bother to notify him; the first he knew about it was an email from a retailer in Montreal asking why he was proceding with the launch given that it had been cancelled. Apparently his account manager is not returning phonecalls or emails. Wolfgang is looking for other avenues of distribution now.
Diamond have got to run a profitable business, and if that means setting difficult sales thresholds, that's one thing... but this entirely another. This is rude and unprofessional and it is
not to be tolerated.
